About this experience
Vienna treats Advent as a season of its own. From mid-November the city's squares fill with wooden huts, the trees are wrapped in lights and the smell of roasted chestnuts, cinnamon and hot punch drifts across the old town. This evening walk sets off at dusk, just as the lights take over, and strings together six inner-city Christmas markets on foot, so you get a feel for how different each one is instead of spending the whole night at the busiest.
The route begins on Spittelberg, a small quarter of Biedermeier lanes behind the MuseumsQuartier where the stalls lean towards ceramics, prints, knitwear and design pieces. A few minutes away, around 70 stalls fill Maria-Theresien-Platz between the twin domed museums of art history and natural history. From there you pass the Parliament and the Volksgarten to Rathausplatz, home of the Wiener Christkindlmarkt, the city's largest market, with the floodlit neo-Gothic City Hall behind the huts, a towering tree and the Eistraum ice rink alongside.
At Rathausplatz your guide buys everyone a mug of punch or Glühwein, with an alcohol-free children's punch for anyone who prefers it, plus a small seasonal snack. Vienna's markets serve hot drinks in their own ceramic mugs: you pay a deposit with each drink and either hand the mug back for a refund or keep it, and your guide explains how that works and what separates a fruity Viennese punch from classic mulled wine. Along the way you will hear which treats are worth queueing for, from Maroni (roasted chestnuts) to Lebkuchen, and how to tell local craftwork from mass-produced decorations.
The second half moves into the medieval core. The Altwiener Christkindlmarkt on the Freyung concentrates on traditional handicrafts, and the next square, Am Hof, where the Babenberg dukes once held court, adds a mix of craft and food huts around its Marian column. After a stroll along the Graben beneath its chandelier-style Christmas lights, the walk finishes at the market beside St. Stephen's Cathedral, a step from the Stephansplatz U-Bahn station on lines U1 and U3.
The 2026 dates are published by the Vienna Tourist Board: the Wiener Christkindlmarkt on Rathausplatz runs from 13 November to 26 December 2026, Maria-Theresien-Platz from 20 November to 26 December, and Spittelberg, Am Hof and the Freyung until 23 December. The walk therefore runs daily from 20 November to 23 December 2026, when every market on the route is open.

Know before you go
Vienna in late November and December is usually cold and often damp, with evening temperatures around freezing. Dress in warm layers and bring a hat, gloves and comfortable waterproof shoes, as you will be walking and standing on cobbles for two and a half hours.
The route covers about 3 km on level ground at an easy pace. The markets get very crowded on Friday and Saturday evenings and on the 8 December public holiday, so keep bags closed and valuables in an inside pocket.
Punch often contains rum or other spirits and is served only to guests aged 18 and over; younger guests receive the alcohol-free children's punch. Tell us about food allergies when booking so the guide can choose a suitable snack.
The walk runs in rain and light snow. If a severe weather warning is issued for Vienna we will offer you a new date or a full refund.
Please arrive 10 minutes early at the Volkstheater. Bring some cash in euros for extra drinks and mug deposits, as a few smaller stalls do not take cards.
Common questions
When are Vienna's Christmas markets open in 2026?+
According to the Vienna Tourist Board, the Wiener Christkindlmarkt on Rathausplatz runs from 13 November to 26 December 2026, daily 10:00 to 22:00 (24 December until 18:30). Spittelberg is open 13 November to 23 December, Maria-Theresien-Platz 20 November to 26 December, Am Hof 13 November to 23 December, the Freyung 14 November to 23 December and Stephansplatz 6 November to 26 December.
What is the difference between punch and Glühwein?+
Glühwein is wine, usually red, heated with spices such as cinnamon and cloves. Viennese Punsch is normally based on fruit juice or tea with sugar and a shot of rum or another spirit, and comes in many flavours such as orange or berry. Kinderpunsch is the alcohol-free version.
Can I keep the mug?+
Yes. Each market has its own mug design and charges a deposit with every hot drink. The deposit for the drink included in the tour is covered, so you can take that mug home. For any extra drinks you pay the deposit at the stall and get it back when you return the mug.
Is the tour suitable for children?+
Yes. Children receive the alcohol-free children's punch and the snack, and the route is flat. Strollers are possible, but the markets are crowded in the evenings, so a baby carrier is easier.
Where does the tour start and finish?+
It starts in front of the Volkstheater (U2 and U3 Volkstheater station) and ends at the Christmas market on Stephansplatz beside St. Stephen's Cathedral, right next to the Stephansplatz U-Bahn station on lines U1 and U3.
