About this experience
Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland, lies right on the Arctic Circle, and in winter two experiences top almost every visitor's list: gliding through snowy forest behind a team of huskies, and meeting Santa Claus in his village on the Arctic Circle line. This half-day tour combines both in about four and a half hours, with transfers from central Rovaniemi, so it fits easily around a flight, an evening northern lights tour or a slow morning.
After pickup from your hotel, a short drive takes you to a husky farm in the forest at the Arctic Circle, about 8 km north of the city centre. The mushers introduce the dogs, explain how a sled team works and show you how to sit safely. Then comes the ride itself: about 2 km along a forest trail on a sled steered by an experienced musher, with up to four guests per sled. It lasts roughly ten minutes, enough to feel the speed and hear nothing but runners on snow and panting dogs. Afterwards you warm up with hot berry juice by the fire in a kota, a traditional Lappish hut, and have time to meet the dogs.
The second half of the tour is in Santa Claus Village. Your guide walks you to the line marking the Arctic Circle in the main square and to Santa Claus Main Post Office, where cards can be stamped with an Arctic Circle postmark that is only available there. At the Santa Claus Office, open every day of the year with free entrance, you can meet Santa himself; official photos and videos are sold separately. You then have free time for shopping, lunch or a coffee before the drive back to your hotel.
The tour runs from 1 December 2026 to 31 March 2027, when snow on the trails is reliable. Visit Rovaniemi notes that the first snow usually falls in November and normally lasts until April. The Santa Claus Office is open 8:00 to 20:00 from 30 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 and 9:00 to 18:00 from 4 January to 31 March 2027. Queues to meet Santa are longest in the weeks before Christmas, while January to March is usually calmer.
Dress for real cold: Visit Rovaniemi gives typical December temperatures of minus 10 to minus 20 °C, and January can be colder still. Around the winter solstice the sun barely rises in Rovaniemi, so the husky ride often takes place in the soft blue twilight that makes Lapland winter photos so distinctive.

Where to meet
Lordin aukio, 96200 Rovaniemi, Finland, at 10:00

Know before you go
Dress in warm layers with thermal underwear, a wool or fleece mid-layer, a windproof jacket and trousers, insulated winter boots, a hat, a scarf and mittens. You sit still on the sled, so you feel the cold more than when walking. If you lack winter gear, rental shops in Rovaniemi hire full sets of outdoor clothing.
The husky ride is gentle and suitable for most ages and fitness levels; guests sit in the sled while the musher drives. Up to four people share a sled. Tell us when booking about back problems, pregnancy or reduced mobility. Children under 4 are welcome on request; contact us before booking so a child seat can be arranged for the transfers.
Husky rides depend on snow and trail conditions, and the musher may shorten the ride in extreme cold to protect the dogs. If there is not enough snow for sled runs, you are told before the tour and can rebook or receive a full refund.
Meeting Santa is free, but queues can be long in December. Bring a card or cash if you want the official photos, a postcard for the Arctic Circle postmark, and a fully charged phone, as batteries drain fast in the cold.
Please be ready in your hotel lobby 10 minutes before pickup. Guests staying outside the central pickup area meet at Lordi Square in the city centre.
Common questions
Is meeting Santa Claus included?+
Yes, time to visit Santa is built into the programme. Entrance to the Santa Claus Office is free and it is open every day of the year. Official photos and videos of your meeting are optional and sold separately on site.
How long is the husky ride, and do I drive the sled?+
The ride is about 2 km and takes roughly ten minutes. An experienced musher drives and you sit in the sled, up to four guests per sled. If you want to drive your own team, choose a longer husky safari, which usually starts at 5 to 10 km.
What happens if there is not enough snow?+
The tour is scheduled from 1 December to 31 March, when snow is normally reliable; Visit Rovaniemi notes the first snow usually falls in November. If trails are not ready, you are told before the tour and can rebook or get a full refund.
How cold will it be?+
Visit Rovaniemi gives typical ranges of minus 10 to minus 20 °C in December, minus 15 to minus 30 °C in January, minus 15 to minus 20 °C in February and minus 5 to minus 15 °C in March. Wind on the sled makes it feel colder, so dress in layers.
When are the queues to meet Santa shortest?+
Queues are longest from late November until Christmas, especially at weekends. January to March is usually quieter. Office hours are 8:00–20:00 from 30 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 and 9:00–18:00 from 4 January to 31 March 2027.
Will we see the northern lights on this tour?+
No, this is a daytime tour. The aurora season in Rovaniemi runs from about November to mid-April; book a separate evening tour away from the city lights for the best chance.
