About this experience
From early December until the first days of January, a compact stretch of Midtown Manhattan becomes New York's open-air Christmas show. This two-hour evening walking tour links the season's best-known sights in one easy loop of about two kilometres, so you see the Rockefeller Center tree, the Fifth Avenue windows and the Saks Fifth Avenue light show together, with a local guide who explains how each tradition started and where to stand for the best view.
The walk begins at Bryant Park, where the Winter Village is back for its 25th season with a free-admission ice rink and more than 180 holiday-market kiosks. Next door, the New York Public Library's Fifth Avenue building and its marble lions, Patience and Fortitude, traditionally dressed with wreaths in December, mark the start of the walk up Fifth Avenue, past department store and jewellers' windows decorated for the holidays.
Between 49th and 50th Streets the facade of Saks Fifth Avenue turns into a giant light display. The store's holiday windows and light show return on 23 November 2026; last season the show played every ten minutes from 5 pm to 11 pm. Directly across the avenue, the illuminated angels of the Channel Gardens lead the eye to the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, a Norway spruce that will be lit for the 2026 season on 2 December and topped with a Swarovski star above the skating rink. The custom goes back to 1931, when workers building the complex put up a small tree on the site.
Around the corner on Sixth Avenue, the neon marquee of Radio City Music Hall advertises the Christmas Spectacular starring the Rockettes, which runs from 4 November 2026 to 4 January 2027, and the oversized red ornaments that usually appear in the fountains across the street make one of the most popular photo stops of the season. The tour then heads back to Fifth Avenue, passes St. Patrick's Cathedral and continues north past the flagship stores of the upper fifties to finish at Bergdorf Goodman's windows and Grand Army Plaza, on the corner of Central Park.
This tour runs every evening from 3 December 2026, the day after the tree lighting, to 3 January 2027, the last day of the Bryant Park holiday shops. The streets around the tree are among the busiest in the city in December, especially on weekends and in the days before Christmas, so the guide keeps the group together and picks viewpoints a little away from the thickest crowds.

Know before you go
Dress for a cold evening outdoors. December nights in New York are often close to freezing and the wind between tall buildings can be sharp, so wear a warm coat, hat, gloves and comfortable waterproof shoes. You will walk about 2 km on flat sidewalks with frequent stops.
The area around the tree, Saks and Radio City is extremely crowded in December, particularly on weekends and in the week before Christmas. Police often direct pedestrian traffic around Rockefeller Center, so short detours are normal. Keep phones and wallets secure and stay close to the guide.
The tour runs in rain and snow. It is cancelled only in severe weather, such as a blizzard warning, in which case you are offered another date or a full refund.
The Saks light show and store windows follow the retailers' own schedules, which for 2026 had not been fully published at the time of writing. Children are welcome; strollers are fine but can be hard to steer through the densest crowds. Public restrooms are available in Bryant Park.
Common questions
When is the 2026 Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting?+
Rockefeller Center has announced that the tree arrives on 7 November 2026 and will be lit on Wednesday, 2 December 2026. The lighting night is very crowded and partly closed off, so this tour starts the following evening, 3 December.
When does the Saks Fifth Avenue light show run?+
The 2026 holiday windows and light show are due to return on 23 November 2026. Last season the show ran every ten minutes from 5 pm to 11 pm into early January; the 2026 schedule will be confirmed by the store, and the tour is timed to catch at least one showing.
How long is the walk and is it suitable for children?+
About two hours and roughly 2 km on flat sidewalks, with stops every few minutes. Children enjoy it, especially the light show and the tree, but bring warm clothes and be prepared for crowds.
Can we go ice skating during the tour?+
There is no skating time on the tour, but you pass both rinks. The Bryant Park rink has free admission (skate rental is extra), while the Rink at Rockefeller Center needs a paid, timed ticket booked in advance. Many guests skate after the tour.
What happens if it rains or snows?+
The tour goes ahead, and snow makes the lights even more atmospheric. Only severe weather, such as a blizzard warning, leads to cancellation, with a new date or full refund offered.
Where does the tour end?+
At Grand Army Plaza on Fifth Avenue and 59th Street, beside Central Park and The Plaza hotel. The 5 Av/59 St subway station (N, R and W lines) is a short walk away.
