About this experience
The evening desert safari is Dubai's classic half-day escape from the city, and the cooler months from October to April are the high season, when late afternoons in the dunes are warm rather than scorching. This shared tour collects you from your hotel in mid-afternoon and drives about 45 minutes south-east to the red sand dunes of the Lahbab area, where the desert opens up beyond the last suburbs.
At the edge of the dunes the driver lets some air out of the tyres and then spends around half an hour dune bashing: climbing, sliding and side-sloping across the sand in a 4x4 Land Cruiser while the city skyline disappears behind you. On a high dune crest the group stops for sandboarding and photos, and stays to watch the sun go down over the desert before driving on to the camp.
The camp is laid out like a Bedouin encampment, with low cushions and rugs around a central stage, Arabic coffee and dates on arrival, a henna corner and a shisha area. A short camel ride is included. After dark a buffet dinner is served, with grilled meats, salads, Arabic mezze, vegetarian dishes and unlimited water and soft drinks. The evening entertainment usually includes a Tanoura whirling dancer, a fire show and a belly-dance performance before you are driven back to your hotel at around 9:30 pm.
Season and dates: the safari runs all year, but October 2026 to April 2027 is the most comfortable period; in summer the heat is intense even in the evening. During Ramadan, expected to begin on about 8 February 2027 and end with Eid al-Fitr on about 9 or 10 March 2027, subject to the official moon sighting, camps adapt their programme: dance shows are usually paused, no alcohol is served and dinner is timed for after sunset.
If you would rather see wildlife than ride the dunes hard, ask about safaris in the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, a protected area of about 225 square kilometres where Arabian oryx and gazelles roam. Driving inside the reserve follows stricter conservation rules and those trips cost more; this tour uses the open red dunes at Lahbab, which are made for an energetic evening out.

Where to meet
Hotel lobby pickup in central Dubai (Downtown Dubai, Business Bay, Bur Dubai, Deira, Jumeirah and Dubai Marina), at 15:00
Wait in your hotel lobby from the confirmed pickup time; the driver calls or messages on arrival. Guests in private apartments are given the nearest hotel or metro station as a pickup point.
Know before you go
Dune bashing is a rough, rolling ride. It is not recommended for pregnant travellers, people with back or neck problems or heart conditions, or anyone who has had recent surgery. If you get motion sickness, eat lightly before pickup and ask for a front seat; you can also ask the driver to take an easier line.
Wear light, comfortable clothes and closed shoes or sandals you do not mind filling with sand, and bring sunglasses. From December to February the desert cools quickly after sunset, so pack a light jacket or sweater.
Pickup usually starts between 3 and 3:30 pm and is later in October and April, when the sun sets later; the exact time is confirmed the day before. Please wait in your hotel lobby with your phone switched on, as the driver collects several guests on the way.
Tell us about food allergies or dietary needs when you book so the camp can confirm what it can prepare. The buffet includes vegetarian dishes.
Rare sandstorms, heavy rain or official weather warnings can stop dune driving; in that case you are offered another date or a full refund. During Ramadan the programme is quieter, with no dance shows and no alcohol.
Common questions
What is dune bashing, and is it safe?+
It is off-road driving up and down the dunes in a 4x4, with steep climbs, slides and sideways runs. Seat belts must stay fastened for the whole drive, and you can ask the driver for a gentler line. It is bumpy, so it is not suitable for pregnant travellers or people with back, neck or heart problems.
What time does the safari start and finish?+
Hotel pickups usually begin between 3 and 3:30 pm in the winter months, a little later in October and April, and you are back at your hotel at around 9:30 pm, about six and a half hours in all.
Is the dinner suitable for vegetarians?+
Yes. Alongside the grilled meats the buffet includes salads, Arabic mezze and vegetarian dishes. Let us know about allergies or special diets when you book.
What changes during Ramadan 2027?+
Ramadan is expected to begin on about 8 February 2027 and to end on about 9 or 10 March, depending on the moon sighting. Safaris still run, but camps usually pause the dance shows, do not serve alcohol and serve dinner after sunset.
What is the difference between the Lahbab red dunes and the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve?+
Lahbab's open red dunes are used for energetic dune bashing, sandboarding and camp evenings like this one. The Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve is a protected area of about 225 square kilometres where driving is more restricted and the focus is on wildlife such as Arabian oryx and gazelles; those safaris are gentler and more expensive.
Can children join?+
Yes, children aged 3 to 11 pay the child rate. Tell us their ages when you book so the driver can bring suitable seats; families with very young children may prefer to skip the most intense part of the dune drive.
