About this experience
Few sights in Türkiye are as recognisable as dozens of balloons rising over the rock spires of Cappadocia at dawn, and winter adds something the busy summer months cannot. On cold mornings after a snowfall, the fairy chimneys, cave dwellings and ridges around Göreme are frosted white, and the low sun turns the snow pink and gold. This sunrise flight takes you over that landscape for about an hour in a shared basket, with hotel pickup, a light breakfast at the launch field and a toast after landing.
Your driver collects you from your hotel in the dark, roughly an hour and a half before sunrise. In December and January the sun rises a little before 8 am local time, so pickups are usually between about 06:00 and 06:30. At the launch field you can watch the crews unroll the envelopes, fill them with cold air from large fans and then fire the burners to stand the balloons upright, while the pilot gives a short safety briefing.
Once airborne, the pilot steers by finding winds that blow in different directions at different heights. A typical flight drifts low along valleys such as Love Valley, Pigeon Valley and the Rose and Red valleys, then climbs for wide views towards the rock castle of Uçhisar and, on clear winter days, the snow-capped volcano of Mount Erciyes on the horizon. No two routes are the same, because they depend on the wind that morning. After about an hour the balloon lands in an open field, often directly onto its trailer, and the morning ends with sparkling wine or fruit juice and a flight certificate before you are driven back to your hotel.
Winter weather is the big variable. Every balloon flight in the region needs permission from Türkiye's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (SHGM), whose Nevşehir coordination office assesses wind and visibility each morning before take-off. Balloons may launch only after the authority gives its green-flag approval. It can hold all flights in half-hour steps while it watches the wind, and cancel the morning for every company at once when conditions are unsafe. On average the region has about 220 flyable days a year, but wind, fog, rain and snow cut that sharply in winter: SHGM figures showed only 90 flight days in the first half of 2026.
Balloons fly all year. This winter listing covers 1 December 2026 to 15 March 2027, when snow on the rocks is most likely, though never guaranteed. Plan at least two or three nights in Cappadocia and book the flight for your first morning, so that a weather cancellation can be moved to the next day; if the authority cancels flights, you can rebook or take a full refund.

Where to meet
Hotel pickup in Göreme, Uçhisar, Ortahisar, Ürgüp, Avanos or Çavuşin (Nevşehir, Türkiye), at 06:15
You are collected from your hotel lobby. The pickup time follows sunrise (about 06:00–06:30 in December and January) and is confirmed the evening before; please be ready in the lobby five minutes early.
Know before you go
Winter mornings in Cappadocia are cold, often below freezing at the launch field before sunrise. Wear warm layers, a hat that covers your head (the burner overhead is hot, the air around you is not), gloves and closed winter shoes, as launch and landing fields can be muddy or snowy. Leave large bags at the hotel.
You need to climb into a waist-high basket using footholds, stand for the whole flight and hold the landing position the pilot teaches you, which can involve a bump. The flight is not suitable for pregnant travellers or anyone with serious back, neck, heart or mobility problems. Most balloon companies do not take children under 6, and children must fly with an adult.
Flights depend on daily approval from Türkiye's civil aviation authority (SHGM). In winter, cancellations because of wind, fog, rain or snow are common, sometimes for several mornings in a row, and a flight can also be called off after you have reached the launch field. If that happens you are driven back to your hotel and offered the next available morning or a full refund.
The pickup time follows sunrise and is confirmed the evening before, usually by message, so give your hotel name and a phone number with WhatsApp when you book. In December and January expect pickup at about 06:00 to 06:30; in early March it is closer to 05:30.
Common questions
Why are balloon flights in Cappadocia cancelled so often in winter?+
Every flight needs approval from Türkiye's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (SHGM), whose Nevşehir coordination office checks wind and visibility each morning. Balloons launch only after a green-flag approval, the authority can impose rolling half-hour holds, and when it cancels, no company flies. Wind, fog, rain and snow are all more frequent from November to March.
What happens if my flight is cancelled?+
You are offered a seat on the next available morning or a full refund. Booking your flight for the first morning of a stay of two or three nights gives you spare mornings to try again.
Will the valleys be covered in snow?+
Snow is most likely between December and February, but it depends on the year and can melt within days. Even without snow, winter brings crisp air, clear views of Mount Erciyes on good days and frost on the rocks at dawn.
What time is pickup in winter?+
About an hour and a half before sunrise. Sunrise in Göreme is around 07:40 to 08:00 in December and January, so pickup is usually between 06:00 and 06:30; by mid-March sunrise is just before 07:00 and pickup is closer to 05:30. The exact time is confirmed the evening before.
How many people are in a basket?+
Standard baskets in Cappadocia usually carry around 20 to 28 passengers, split into several passenger compartments around the pilot's central section. Smaller comfort and private baskets can be booked separately at a higher price.
Can children fly?+
Children from 6 years old can fly with an adult and pay the same price as adults on this listing. Most balloon companies in Cappadocia do not take children under 6.
