About this experience
Budapest's Advent season begins on 13 November 2026, when both of the city's flagship Christmas markets open: the Vörösmarty Classic Xmas fair on Vörösmarty tér, which runs into the New Year, and Advent Bazilika in front of St. Stephen's Basilica, open until 1 January 2027. This two-and-a-half-hour walk links the two through the heart of Pest, timed so that you reach the Basilica as its evening light show gets going.
We meet at dusk in front of the Gerbeaud house on Vörösmarty tér, home since the 19th century of one of the city's best-known coffee houses. The square fills with wooden huts selling handmade ceramics, felt, leather goods and wooden toys, and with kitchens serving the market food Hungarians actually queue for: lángos fried flatbread, stuffed cabbage, sausages and bejgli, the poppy-seed and walnut rolls baked for Christmas. Here you get your chimney cake (kürtőskalács), sweet yeast dough wound around a wooden spit and baked over glowing embers until the sugar caramelises, a pastry with roots among the Hungarians of Transylvania.
From the fair the route crosses to the Danube promenade for the classic view of Buda Castle and the Széchenyi Chain Bridge lit up across the river, then continues to Széchenyi István tér and the Art Nouveau Gresham Palace. A short walk inland brings you to Szent István tér, where Advent Bazilika spreads out beneath the Basilica's dome and towers. Your guide hands out a cup of forralt bor, Hungarian mulled wine, usually made with red wine, cinnamon, cloves and orange. In the 2025 season a projection show was mapped onto the Basilica's facade every half hour from 17:30, and we time the visit to catch it. Earlier editions also had a small ice rink by the tree, but in 2024 the organisers replaced it with a community area, so do not count on skating.
The walk ends with a stroll up the first stretch of Andrássy út, the grand boulevard that is part of Budapest's UNESCO World Heritage Site, to the Hungarian State Opera, where a decorated tree has stood beneath the arcade in recent Decembers. From the Opera stop, the historic M1 Millennium Underground takes you back to Vörösmarty tér or out to Heroes' Square.
Published 2026 hours: Vörösmarty tér is open 11:00 to 21:00 Sunday to Thursday and until 22:00 on Fridays and Saturdays; Advent Bazilika is open 11:00 to 22:00, until 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. Both markets keep short hours on 24 to 26 December, so the walk runs daily from 13 November to 30 December 2026 except on those three days.

Where to meet
Vörösmarty tér 7-8, 1051 Budapest, Hungary, at 16:00
Meet in front of the Gerbeaud house on the north side of Vörösmarty tér, a few steps from the Vörösmarty tér stop of the M1 metro. Look for the guide with a VacoTours sign.
Know before you go
Budapest in late November and December is cold, often around freezing in the evening, and the Danube promenade can be windy. Wear warm layers, a hat and gloves, and comfortable shoes for about 2.5 km of flat walking.
Forralt bor is served only to guests aged 18 and over; younger guests receive hot tea. The chimney cake contains wheat, egg and dairy and toppings may include nuts, so please tell us about allergies when booking.
Both markets are busiest on Friday and Saturday evenings and in the week before Christmas. Keep bags zipped and valuables out of back pockets.
The walk runs in rain or snow. If a severe weather warning is issued we will offer another date or a full refund.
Many stalls accept cards, but carry some Hungarian forints for small purchases. The tour does not go inside the Basilica, which charges its own admission.
Common questions
When are the Budapest Christmas markets open in 2026?+
Both main markets open on 13 November 2026. Advent Bazilika runs until 1 January 2027 (Mon-Thu and Sun 11:00-22:00, Fri-Sat 11:00-23:00), and the Vörösmarty tér fair runs into the New Year (Sun-Thu 11:00-21:00, Fri-Sat 11:00-22:00), with craft stalls staying until 28 December. Both have short hours on 24-26 December.
What time is the light show on St. Stephen's Basilica?+
In the 2025 season the projection ran every half hour from 17:30. The 2026 schedule had not been published by mid-October 2026; the walk reaches the Basilica at about 17:20 so you can see at least one show.
Is there still an ice rink at the Basilica market?+
Not in recent years. The small rink that used to circle the tree on Szent István tér was replaced in 2024 by a community area. If skating is important to you, check the Advent Bazilika website before your trip.
What is kürtőskalács?+
A chimney cake: strips of sweet yeast dough wound around a wooden spit, baked over embers and rolled in sugar, often with cinnamon, walnut or cocoa. It comes from the Hungarian communities of Transylvania and is one of the most popular treats at Budapest's markets.
Can children join?+
Yes. Children get a chimney cake and hot tea instead of mulled wine. The route is flat, but the markets are crowded in the evening, so a carrier is easier than a stroller.
Where does the tour end?+
At the Hungarian State Opera on Andrássy út, next to the Opera station of the M1 Millennium Underground, one stop from Bajcsy-Zsilinszky út and three from Vörösmarty tér.
